This SAF assignment was about Odysseus from The Odyssey. You had to decide whether or not Odysseus was a true hero or not. I chose to say that he was a true hero because of his many heroic traits and leadership skills. I learned more about Odysseus and his personality through this project. If I had to do this assignment again, I would find more heroic traits that Odysseus had and write about those as well.
This SAF assignment was on the main theme of "The Scarlet Ibis". I learned about the theme of "The Scarlet Ibis" through this assignment, It helped me figure out what the main theme of the story was. I said the theme was pride can be positive or negative. If I had to do this assignment again, I might write a little bit more on the topic and make it more detailed.
This SAF assignment was about the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. I had to choose whether the 1968 or the 1996 version was better, I chose the 1996 version because of the better acting. From this assignment I learned about the two different versions of the balcony scene, I compared and contrasted the two to decide which one I thought was better, If I were to do this assignment again I would use specific examples for my reasoning.
This essay was about the poem "Funeral Blues" by W.H. Auden. The theme I identified was death causes heartbreak. The three poetic devices that supported this claim were metaphors, hyperboles, and imagery. From writing this essay about the poem I read I learned about how tragic death can be. The speaker was heartbroken over the dead man in the poem. If I had to write this essay again I might use more quotes from the text and better explain my reasoning behind the poetic devices I chose.
This essay was my this i believe essay. I wrote about how I believe in saving endangered species. I learned a lot about different kinds of endangered species, both plants and animals, when researching information for my essay. If I had to write this essay again I would make it more personal to me, and maybe add some more information.
This essay was written about the Greek goddess Hera. I learned about Hera and many other gods and goddess she was associated with in researching information for this project. Hera was a very powerful and vengeful goddess who was married to her brother, Zeus. She was the goddess of marriage and family. I also learned about many myths Hera was involved in. They were mostly about her getting revenge for her husband's infidelities. If I were to write this essay again, I might add even more information.
This assignment was a group project for the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. My group did our presentation on society and government. I learned a lot about different types of government in different places, Fahrenheit 451's government, and the atomic age. If I had to do this project again I might research a few topics further and put more pictures on the slides.
Final Course Reflection
I somewhat enjoyed English 1, but in general I do not like English. I don't like learning about grammar, reading material that is required, writing essays, or pretty much anything else having to do with English. I didn't enjoy reading any of the stories we read in English 1, except for maybe "The Scarlet Ibis". I enjoyed that story because of the characters and the plot. If I could choose to eliminate something we read this semester, I would choose to eliminate the play Romeo and Juliet. That was my least favorite story that we read in class. Shakespeare's made-up words made the story very hard to understand and I didn't like how the characters talked. I didn't like doing the group project for Act II of Romeo and Juliet either, but I do prefer working in groups to working alone. I think we should have watched the entire Romeo and Juliet movie. Something that I did like about English 1 was that we had very little homework.
Final Analysis of Writing
One of my strengths in English is taking quizzes. I usually do well on those, especially the vocabulary quizzes we took every week. The vocabulary quizzes were most likely my favorite quizzes to take in your class. I have learned many interesting new words and what they mean because of vocab. One of my weaknesses is writing. I'm not the best at writing. Another weakness is it's hard for me to sit down and read something that I don't want to read. Reading required material was my least favorite thing about English. I think I the thing I have most improved on this semester is identifying run-on sentences. I am now able to identify many types of run-on sentences, and I also know how to fix them. You can either add a semicolon or a comma and coordinating conjunction. I may not be good at writing sentences, but I can identify them. My goal for next school year is to be academically successful. My goal for English is to get an A in English II, or at least a B. I hope to do well and enjoy in English 11 in the coming school year.
